CALTAGIRONE
Caltagirone - The first settlements in the Caltagirone area date from the Bronze Age, as demonstrated by the necropolis and the archaeological remains found in this area.
To discover the origins of its ceramic production you must, however, go back to the time of Arab rule. Since then, the processing and trade of ceramics, extensively used in urban architecture, have never ceased to sustain the local economy and are now more vibrant than ever.
The importance of this art is recorded in the Regional Ceramic Museum, reached from the Teatrino in the fine Public gardens. From here, Via Roma leads to Piazza Umberto I, on which stand the Duomo and the Corte Capitaniale, an original one-storey construction dating from the 16th century.
The symbol of the city remains, however, the famous flight of steps that climbs from Piazza del Municipio to the church of Santa Maria del Monte.
