 CALTANISSETTA

Caltanissetta lies on the southern slopes of Mt San Giuliano and is the capital of the province of the same name, which in times past lived through alternating phases of great economic/commercial success and of decadence. A visit to the city can start in Piazza Garibaldi, on which stands the Cathedral, usually known as Santa Maria la Nuova and built between 1570 and 1622.

The 18th-century frescoes by Guglielmo Borremans covering the vault of the nave form one of the most important painted cycles in southern Italy, today returned to its original splendour thanks to restoration completed in 2002. The same year also saw the reopening of the Diocesan museum, which exhibits a collection of statues, paintings and holy vestments dating from the i6th-i9th centuries.

The interior of the church of Sant'Agata is very rich and its baroque facade rises above steps dominating the view of Corso Umberto I.

Visit the Archaeology Museum to see finds from the nearby sites of Capodarso and Sabucina, where excavations have uncovered the remains of settlements dating from the Bronze Age.

The stronghold with the ruins of the Castle of Pietrossa, founded by the Arabs, commands a sweeping view of the city and its environs.
