ENNA
Enna - The highest provincial capital in Italy (931 m) is a natural balcony and has developed on the top of a mountain that is blanketed with fog even at the height of summer, in the heart of Sicily.
The Sicanian introduced the crop of wheat, to which the myth of Ceres and Proserpine is linked; the remains of the temple dedicated to the goddess still stand on the rocky spur known as the Rocca di Cerere.
If you go on to explore the east of the town, your gaze will be drawn to the castle of Lombardia and, from here, you can move on from Via Roma to the Duomo (i4th-i6th C); the main facade towers high on a majestic flight of steps and is surmounted by a bell-tower dating from the 17th century.
Behind is the Alessi Museum, named after the remarkable numismatic collection belonging to the canon Giuseppe Alessi; the rooms of nearby Palazzo Varisano display the finds belonging to the Archaeology Museum.
Also worthy of a stop is the tower of Frederick II, visible from several parts of the town; built in the 13th century on the top of a hill, it has an octagonal base and stands 24m high.
