LIPARI ISLAND
LIPARI - An archipelago of volcanic formation, the nature and landscape of the Eolie seem to be from a different age.
Vulcano still conserves the charm of untamed nature, which can be observed on an excursion to the craters; Salina has the richest vegetation and is a place of transit for migratory birds; Panarea is the smallest and oldest island, surrounded by a number of islets; Stromboli is home to the only permanently active volcano in the archipelago.
Lipari, the largest island where the conformation of the terrain, flat in various parts, has allowed the development of several towns, which as well as Lipari are Canneto, Acquacalda, Quattropiani and Pianoconte. Marina Corta and Marina Lunga are Lipari's two ports. Arriving from the sea, you immediately see the Castle; its present appearance stems from the construction of the walls in 1560; it is home to the Eolie Museum of Archaeology, a must for those wishing to learn more about the origins, history and culture of the archipelago. The section on the prehistoric cultures that succeeded one another on the island is in Palazzo Vescovile (early 18th C), which partially incorporates the old monastery of Norman foundation.
A visit to the archaeology section of the Eolie Museum culminates in a room displaying vases by the Painter of Lipari (first half 3rd C. BC); his works feature bright tempera colours applied after the vase had been fired. Above: Lipari with Vulcano behind it.
