MESSINA
The history of Messina is filled with afflictions, such as the devastating earthquakes of 1783 and 1908, which swept the old city away, plus the damage caused by the 1943 bombing.
The reconstruction was clearly executed with respect for anti-seismic criteria, and this has manifestly conditioned its appearance. ioaay, it looks like a totally modern city, with only rare glimpses of architecture that hint at past epochs. It was founded before Greek colonisation and was, from the very first, a trading port of great importance, such that its history is indissolubly bound to the presence of the sea and the Strait.
Among the interesting monuments in the city are the Duomo, the present structure of which is fruit of the reconstruction that followed the last earthquake, and the annexed bell-tower with its famous clock, as well as the fountain of Orione and the Regional Museum; among other works, this also displays a polyptych by Antonello da Messina and two paintings produced by Caravaggio during his brief stay in the city, between 1608 and 1609.
