PIAZZA ARMERINA
Say Piazza Armerina and thoughts immediately go to the beautiful Roman mosaics of Villa del Casale, not far from the town.
Excavations conducted from 1929 on have uncovered a vast building dating from the 4th century AD; it comprises forty rooms arranged in terraces that adapt to the terrain, grouped in four sections: main entrance and spa area; peristyle with living room and guest rooms; private rooms and basilica; and the triclinium and elliptical courtyard.
Nearly all the rooms are paved with perfectly conserved polychrome mosaics, illustrating mythology and scenes from everyday life.
But the fame of the villa, the most important evidence of the Roman civilisation on the island, has long overshadowed the town, the old centre of which deserves a good visit.
The Aragonese castle opens onto a splendid view of the town and its environs; the Duomo, built in the 17th and 18th centuries in baroque style, surmounted by a majestic dome, dominates the surrounding town centre and contains a fine wooden crucifix dated 1455, painted on both sides. The 17th-century church of San Rocco also deserves a visit.
